What Is Garlic?


Garlic is a member of the lily family, along with onions, shallots, and leeks. Its intense and unique flavor and aroma is making it a key player of cuisines around the world. It has a bulb like shape and it grows underground. Covered in an inedible papery skin, the bulb, or head as it is more often referred to, is comprised of individual sections called cloves. A flower of garlic contains about 10-15 cloves per head. Garlic can be hard to classify however you may cook with this ingredient at home, taste it in sauces and eat it in dishes like pasta, stir-fries, and baked vegetables.

Garlic belongs to the onion family, alongside shallots, leeks, and chives. This is a vegetable which any edible part of an herbaceous plant, such as the roots, leaves, stems, and bulbs. The garlic plant itself has a bulb, tall stem, and long leaves. In fact, its growing green leaves are also edible and very delicious while eating as a salad also.

Garlic has the ability to boost the function of the immune system; a daily garlic supplement reduced the number of cold.
